The Russian Death-Ray

Prototyping the PCB

Ā

Itā€™s time to get geekier (is that a word?) and fix the wiring mess to beā€¦ wellā€¦ less messy.
To do that I needed a few things:

  1. Wires (daaā€¦)
  2. PCB prototype board
  3. JST XH2.54 connections (a very friendly name, imagine how fun it was to find this name)
  4. Soldering gear, and a very shady soldering skills
  5. Someone to stand over your head (like my wife) thinking you are going to eitherĀ burn down the house, or planning an elaborateĀ heist that will finally buy her the fountain of angels in the driveway she always wanted.

The idea here is to see how we can minimize the connections, for example - make one intersection for the A5 connection as almost all the sensors connect to;
Now do the same for all the others - A4, GND, 3v, etcā€¦
The results:

Looks nice right?
Now to check that I didnā€™t screw anything (which I did because of my excellent soldering skills), I connected everything and fired up the system - Kudos ! Itā€™s working!

Ā

*Enters my wife - ā€œWhat is this Russian Death-Ray you have on your table???ā€

It was at that moment I realized, yes itā€™s pretty, but I need a real PCB, PCB is better looking, and itā€™s also fun to build and not expensive apparentlyĀ at all.
EasyEDA is a Web-tool that I used in the past, allowing you to design your own PCB, and honestly, itā€™s really easy once you get it.

I decided to model also the fan controller fromĀ this post (remember that I told you to wait and see?)
A little magic, exporting toĀ JLCPCB which can be done directly through EasyEDA, and apparently the entire thing cost me a ridiculous staggering amount ofā€¦ wait for itā€¦Ā 4.4 Euros including 5 pieces each and shipping to germany that took 6 daysā€¦ amazing!

After a very long waiting, 6 days, I got it!

Ā

And itā€™s beautifulā€¦ just look at itā€¦ Hereā€™s the before and after, ohh this will make my life so much easier when I model the 3D casing.

Ā

Now for those who want the PCB, I still havenā€™t decided if Iā€™m going to release the PCB files to the public, or send it to you in exchange for a small donation šŸ™ƒ
Let me know what you think.

Thanks for reading!
